GUWAHATI, June 9 - To pay tribute to the martyrs of its movement on food and economy-related issues in 1974, the AASU will observe students unity day tomorrow across the State. AASU activists Gajen Ingti and Putul Saikia laid down their lives in police firing in Morigaon on June 10 during the movement.

In a statement, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi said the student body had led the movement across the State in support of its 21-point demand charter.

But the peaceful protesters were subjected to the Congress governments atrocities. In Morigaon Bhurbondha, both the students lost their lives in police firing. Since then, the AASU has been observing the day as students unity day, as a symbolic protest against the atrocities on students and divisive policies of the government, simultaneously uniting the students for their greater cause, added the statement.
