AASU stir over Assam Accord implementation

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, Aug 13 Members of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today burnt effigies of the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Chief Minister, and the Assam Accord Implementation Minister in protest against the Centre and the State Governments failure to implement the Assam Accord even after 27 years of its signing.

Protesters also warned the Government against settling infiltrators in the wake of the mass displacement of people following the communal clashes in the BTAD. The AASU said that it would not rest until the Government implemented every clause of the Assam Accord in its letter and spirit within a definite time-frame. This has been a serious lapse on the part of both the Centre and the State Government. It amounts to undermining the security of both the State and the nation, besides being an insult on the people of Assam, it said.

The AASU further demanded immediate update of the NRC for ensuring that no infiltrator manages to register themselves as Indian citizens.
