AASU stages NH-37 blockade

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

DIBRUGARH, Sept 3 - Irked over the deteriorating road condition in the region, the district unit of All Assam Students Union (AASU) today staged a massive blockade on NH-37 near Chaulkhowa, the site from where Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal had recently instructed the concerned department to repair the road within 30 hours after disembarking from his vehicle.

All the roads in the home district of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal are getting worse day by day. Huge potholes can be seen almost everywhere. The Godapani road overbridge near Dibrugarh University continues to be in its worst form ever as several big potholes have surfaced with visible sharp iron rods jutting out.

AASU condemned the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and PWD for failing to repair and maintain the roads. They also criticised the department for ignoring the orders of the Chief Minister. The AASU members blocked the road for about an hour and dispersed only after departmental officials gave them a written assurance to repair the roads.
