AASU meets Speaker on NRC update

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, March 13 Leaders of the All Assam Students Union (AASU) today met Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Pranab Gogoi and expressed their concern over the conspiracy to derail the NRC updating process in the State that has been started after the interference of the Supreme Court.

The students body alleged that the controversy over the definition of Assamese is a ploy of the State government to disturb the smooth process of NRC updating and for protecting the interest of the illegal Bangladeshis. AASU advisor Samujjal Bhattacharyya told The Assam Tribune that the Speaker assured them of considering the matter positively.

The students body told the Speaker that proper definition of Assamese is required only for 100 per cent seat reservation for the indigenous people in the local bodies, State Legislative Assembly and the Parliament, so that no foreign national can become a public representative in future. However, the government had stalled the entire process of granting constitutional safeguard on the plea of no consensus over the definition of Assamese, alleged Bhattacharyya.
