GUWAHATI, Feb 19 - The All Assam Students Union (AASU) has invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a debate on the Assam Accord and the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019. The invitation of the student body came after the Prime Ministers recent assertion that there would be no rethinking on the CAA.

Reacting to the Prime Ministers recent statement on the issue, the AASU chief adviser Samujjal Bhattacharya lamented that the Central government failed to show any respect to non-violent movements. He said that on one hand the Prime Minister had commented that he respected non-violent movements in Assam, but on the other, he is adamant on imposing the CAA against the wishes of the people of the Northeast.

Moreover, during his tenure as the Prime Minister, Modi has not been able to find a single day to have a dialogue to review the implementation of the Assam Accord.

Bhattacharya said that the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister are behaving in an arrogant and undemocratic manner and trying to impose the CAA on the people of the region just because the BJP has the numbers in the Parliament. He alleged that the Centre has also tried to play divide and rule politics in the Northeast. If the CAA is bad for the ILP covered areas and areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution, how can it be good for the rest of Assam? he asked.
