GUWAHATI, July 10 - Strongly condemning the alleged rape and murder of a 53-year-old school teacher in Udalguri district, the All Assam Students Union (AASU) has demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
The students union said that the gruesome incident has once again exposed the failure of the State machinery in controlling crimes against women.
The lady teacher, who went missing in the morning of July 6, was found dead on July 7 in a private school near her home. There have been allegations that her face was disfigured by the criminals by splashing some corrosive substance.
The rape and murder of Nayantara Saharia, a resident of Kalaigaon, Udalguri, and a school teacher of Balipara Krishak Mukti High School, has shocked the entire State. All the culprits involved in this heinous crime must be booked and should be given exemplary punishment. The State government must order a judicial probe into the matter, AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi stated.
They further alleged that the people of Assam are feeling unsafe under the BJP rule amid a worsening law and order situation. The State government has completely failed to control such incidents, the student leaders stated.
The AASU also demanded stringent statutory provisions to control such crimes in Assam.
