MORIGAON, Jan 10 � The AASU has urged the Centre to establish five Centrally-funded and managed independent educational institutions in Assam.
AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharya, while speaking at the second open session of Assam Science Society here today, raised the demand to set up the following institutions � Indian Institute of Scientific Education and Research, IIM, AIIMS, River Research Institute and Medicinal Plant Discovery and Research Institute.
Such institutes under the Central government have been functioning in all the States except Assam, he said.
Talking to newsmen, Dr Bhattacharya referred to the recent tripartite talk on the issue of big dams held in New Delhi and said that the minutes published by the Centre were incomplete and there could be vested interest of some lobbies against the people of Assam. He also raised four points verifying the AASU�s stand on the matter.
�On the Lower Subansiri Hydro-electric Project, there must be downstream impact study, besides a study on the cumulative impact of the proposed 168 dams in Arunachal Pradesh. It must also be made clear what Assam stands to gain from the big dams. Assam must be given 12 per cent free power if the Lower Subansiri project is completed in a scientific manner,� he said.
