AASU activists show black flags to State BJP chief

JORHAT, Feb 17 - The Titabar unit of AASU activists of Jorhat district today showed black flags to a cavalcade of BJP leaders which included BJP State president Ranjit Dass and Assam Rajya Sabha MP Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, and reportedly had a verbal altercation with the BJP members and supporters near the Deba Bora Memorial Club at Titabar town.

The incident took place around noon. A senior police official of Titabar Police Sub-divisional administration said that the cavalcade had stopped near a railway crossing as the gate was closed and it was then the AASU activists took advantage of the situation and showed black flags and shouted slogans against the Citizenship Amendment, Act, 2019.

Responding to AASU protesters, the BJP members and supporters accompanying their leaders got involved in a verbal duel, the official stated.

However, as shortly thereafter the gates of the railway crossing were opened and the procession passed off the spot, the protest by AASU activists stopped.

Secretary of Titabar unit of AASU Amit Saikia said that the students� body members staged the protest in a democratic and peaceful manner by showing black flags.

One detained: Meanwhile, in another incident today one Rituraj Goswami was detained by Jorhat police on charges of shouting anti-CAA slogans near the Jorhat Circuit House where Finance, Health and Family Welfare, Education and PWD Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was holding a meeting with party workers.

A police source said that Goswami is from Pulibor on the outskirts of Jorhat and is reportedly is post-graduate student.

BJP State chief Ranjit Dass is here on the party�s Mission 100 plan, a target set by the party of winning 100 Assembly seats in the 2021 Assembly polls elections.

Dass visited Titabar, the constituency won by former Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi since 2001, and Mariani seat, which has been won three times by Congress legislator Rupjyoti Kurmi.

Dass, later talking to newspersons said that tourism had been affected due to the anti-CAA protests and some development works too got hampered.

He added that the people were now understanding what CAA was and said that successful organising of Filmfare Awards in Assam sent a positive message outside the State.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, also told newspersons earlier at Jorhat Circuit House that BJP was sure to win 100 seats and that the contest was mainly between the BJP and the Congress.

Regarding the possibility of an emergence of a third front, the Minister said that the BJP would effectively deal with the scenario politically if the need arose. He added that it was not known whether the proposed third front could affect the prospects of the Congress or BJP.

Replying to a query, Sarma brushed aside the possibility of Delhi elections having an impact on the BJP�s fortune in Assam saying that Assam polls did not affect Delhi neither would the Delhi results affect Assam.
