A village with a single family!

NALBARI, Feb 20 - A small village (No. 2 Dhonara) under Barbhag revenue circle in Nalbari district has completely changed the concept of the people about a village. We have a clear concept that a village is formed when a good number of families reside together in a rural area. Interestingly the No. 2 Dhonara village is inhabited by a single family.

Despite 71 years of Independence, no developmental work has taken place at the village, though it is not far way from Nalbari town. There is no sign of any modern basic amenities like electricity, roads, telephone and not to speak of Internet etc. The only resident of the under- developed village is the farmer family of Bimal Deka. Deka with his wife Anima Deka, son Naren Deka and two daughters Dipali Deka and Seuti Deka reside here giving an identity to this revenue village. Despite the village lacking all modern amenities, his son is studying BA at Barbhag College while the two daughters are studying in class X and Viii standards respectively. In the absence of electricity, they study under the light of kerosene lamps. Due to lack of any proper road, Bimals wife Anima herself rows a boat to drop and pick up their children to and from the school situated in a nearby village. During the monsoons, the village roads remain under chest deep water and then the country boat becomes the only means of communication.

Talking to this correspondent, Deka said that agriculture and animal rearing are the only source of livelihood of his family. We work hard to run the family comfortably, he added. He alleged that the local government agencies like the zila parishad, gaon panchayat or the block development office are not interested to carry out any developmental works in the village. The revenue village is still running without the facilities of pure drinking water, electricity, irrigation, transportable roads, school among others. Other people are not interested to live in the village due to the poor state of infrastructure. Deka however said that all political leaders only visited the village during the election in search of votes.
