7 injured as storm hits Shillong

SHILLONG, April 6 - Seven persons were injured and over one hundred families were affected by a cyclonic storm which hit Nongmensong, Mynlynrei, Umpling, Pynthorumkhrah and Nongpathaw in the State capital and damaged houses and telephone poles, uprooted trees and ripped power lines on Tuesday.

In the evening the storm again lashed most parts of the State capital and Meghalaya Electricity Corporation shut down power to avoid casualties.

East Khasi Hills District Administration here held a review meeting today following the cyclonic storm. East Khasi Hills DC and Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority, PS Dkhar met the Incident Response Team to review and supervise the response activities. Dkhar has asked officers to prioritise provision of medical aid, food, shelter and drinking water.

An Emergency Operation Centre has been established in the State Capital and toll free numbers � 1077 and 0364-2502094 � were opened for the public for any disaster related inquiries, the DC informed.
