5 labourers from Assam die in Itanagar wall collapse

ITANAGAR, June 24 - In a tragic incident, five migrant labourers from Assam were buried alive when a retaining wall came crashing down on a makeshift barrack type house after being hit by a massive landslide triggered by torrential rain.

The accident occurred around 6 am today at Doni Colony near City SP Office here.

The deceased have been identified as Pappu Katiya (25), Pappu Garel (21), Kanha Kenwar (35), Bablu Telenga (18) and Jiten Telenga (19).

Though the construction works at the site were completed two months ago, the migrant workers from Assam�s Biswanath Chariali area were staying there.

Immediately after getting the information, rescue teams comprising of personnel from NDRF, SDRF, State Police and workforce from District Administration swung into action. After over four-hour-long strenuous operation they could retrieve all five bodies trapped under the mounds of debris.

The rescue operation was supervised by DIGP (West) Tusar Taba, Capital Complex Deputy Commissioner Prince Dhawan, Secretary, Disaster Management Bidol Tayeng and District Disaster Management Officer Moromi Sonam.
