SIVASAGAR, Sept 27 - In another road accident at Demow on the NH-37, a speeding truck (WB19 K 1848) rammed into a Tata Tiago (AS04S5035) from the back and threw it off the road into a pit and drove away. Miraculously, all the four passengers inside the car were saved as they had their seat belts on. They, however, sustained injuries.
Traffic policemen on duty way chased the speeding truck till Demow Chariali and tried to stop it but the driver, who was reportedly in an inebriated condition, suddenly accelerated with a police constable hanging on to the door on the driver�s side for about half a kilometre. The constable finally was able to stop the driver and had him arrested.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Transport Virendra Mittal, on Tuesday met the Sivasagar district administration officials and took stock of the situation after the tragic road accident near Thowra Doul that took nine lives and grievously injured 15 others. Mittal went for an on-the-spot investigation with Sivasagar SP Amitabh Sinha, DTO Sanjeev Hazarika and OC Demow S Shyam. The Commissioner spoke to a number of local persons near the spot of the accident and also to an injured Pradip Dihingia. Dihingia reportedly told the Commissioner that the driver of the Traveller was talking to somebody on his mobile phone. The Commissioner instructed the DTO and police officials to control speeding vehicles on the highway.
Meanwhile, two of the unidentified bodies of Monday�s accident were identified to be those of Sarumoinaporiya�s Rajiv Bora and Silapathar�s Nikhil Baidya.
