30,15,392 ha cultivable area in State

GUWAHATI, March 7 � The total cultivable area of the State extends to 30,15,392 hectares, and as per the 2005-06 agri census, the State has a total of 27,50,114 farmer families.

The break-up of the agricultural families includes 23,44,420 families of small and marginal agriculturalists and 4,902 families of big agriculturalists. In addition, there are 3,17,859 semi-medium and 82,933 medium families of agriculturalists.

Agriculture Minister Nilamani Sen Deka said this in the Assembly today in a written reply to a question from Manowar Hussain (AIUDF).

The minister further revealed that a total of 904 tractors and 1,863 power tillers had been distributed among farmers in the State during 2011-12, while 80,834 shallow tubewells (STWs) and 26,350 low-lift pumps (LLPs) had been installed in the same period.

In 2010-11, 250 tractors and 1,161 power tillers were distributed. The number of STWs and LLPs installed was 27,699 and 3,265 respectively during the year.
