BARPETA, Sept 24 - In a shocking incident, three labourers were killed when they entered a septic tank for work in an under-construction building at ward no 2 of Barpetaroad in Barpeta district this morning. According to information available, the labourers were scheduled to remove pieces of wood and bamboo and one of them entered first. He asked his fellow workers to arrange for light to work inside the tank.
But after arranging for the light, they could not find any response and another one entered the tank. The second one informed that the first one was drowning in the water of the tank and asked for some rope and subsequently he also became silent. Failing to get any response, the third one entered and he too got silent after a few moments. As there was another one outside, he began to shout for help and police was also informed.
After a vigorous operation by the police, fire brigade and NDRF personnel, all the three bodies were retrieved by afternoon. They have been identified as Rafikul Islam (34), Asuruddin (30) and Akmat Ali (20). Suffocation due to lack of oxygen is supposed to have caused the tragedy.
