3 family members feared killed in Arunachal landslide

ITANAGAR, May 26 - Three members of a family, including two small children, are feared to have been buried alive when a major landslide triggered by heavy rainfall, swept away their house at Arzoo village in Dibang Valley district.

The incident occurred 85 km away from Anini, the headquarters of Dibang Valley district, on Monday evening.

Expressing deep shock and sorrow over the loss of three lives in the landslide, Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced ex-gratia payment of Rs 4 lakh each to the next of kin of the deceased.

The Chief Minister has also directed the district administrations and the Disaster Management Department to continuously monitor the situation. He appealed to the people living in flood and landslide-prone areas to shift to safer locations.

Meanwhile, giving details of the landslide, Dibang Valley DC Wayong Khimhun said that the house of one Rukuchu Meme, located at the valley side of Arzoo village on the Hunli-Anini TAH Road, was washed away by a major landslide last evening.

�During the incident, it is reported that there were three people inside the house and all are feared buried alive,� the DC said, adding that a detailed report is awaited.

Those feared killed are Leney Umbrey (28), wife of the house owner, their son, Ewu Meme (8), and daughter, Eshi Meme (3). At the time of the incident, the house owner was away at the Punli site of the TTC, where he is an employee.

The road leading to Arzoo from Anini has been blocked at many locations following landslides due to incessant rain since last two weeks.
