SHILLONG, July 25 - Three Atomic Minerals Directorate (AMD) officials have been injured, one critically, in an attack by miscreants today in the remote Wakhaji area in South West Khasi Hills district. Two AMD vehicles were also torched in the incident.

Deputy Commissioner of the district I Laloo said that district officials have rushed to the remote location and the injured have been shifted to the nearby hospitals.

We are not able to say much about the incident at this moment, but two vehicles have been torched. The people injured have been rushed to the nearby hospitals, Laloo said over the phone.

Wakhaji and its adjoining areas in South West Khasi Hills district are rich in Uranium deposit. The Uranium Corporation of India Limited and also AMD are involved in the prospecting of the mineral.

However, there is strong opposition against Uranium mining by NGOs in the State. The State Government has also earlier stated that no Uranium mining would be allowed in the State without the consent of the people.
