2 GNLA cadres killed in West Khasi Hills

SHALLANG (MEGHALAYA), June 9 - In another setback for Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), an encounter between police and cadres of the group left two militants dead while seven others are said to be injured.

The encounter took place this morning near Jugisil village under Shallang Police Station in West Khasi Hills at about 4 am today.

According to police, based on reports of the presence of Khasi Hills commander of the outfit, Nit, a search operation was conducted near the village by a special police team including SF-10 on the night of June 8.

During the operation, the police encountered a group of 14-15 GNLA men who fired at them. The police fired in retaliation which led to the death of two GNLA cadres while another seven militants were injured. The two killed GNLA men were yet to be identified. Police recovered one Chinese rifle and one SBML gun from the encounter site.

The police believe the area commander Nit and senior cadre Newak have been injured during the incident though they were able to flee the scene.

A massive search operation has been launched in search of the injured cadres. There was no casualty among the police personnel.

The GNLA has been in the process of regrouping after its loss of men over the past few months, after most commands of the outfit surrendered to police last year.
