NALBARI, Sept 16 - While the State Education Department has been trying to uplift the education scenario at the elementary level with infrastructural development, the condition of some of the primary schools is abysmal.
The lack of students in government schools is considered to be a major problem in the State.The mushrooming growth of private schools and the favour shown by the people towards them, has brought uncertainty to the elementary-level schools in the public sector. Lack of students has forced the Education department to close down some schools in the State.
According to the District Information of School Education ( DISE) 2014-2015, a total of 153 primary schools in the State are unfortunately running without a single student. Despite these schools reportedly having adequate buildings and teachers, they are forced to remain closed only due to non-availability of students. On the other hand, the report said that a total of 141 schools have less than five students, while the students in 760 primary schools is less than 10.The deplorable state of those schools under the Elementary Education Department in the State has remained a cause of great concern.
Meanwhile, the Sarba Siksha Abhijan (SSA), has decided to form an enrolment drive group in each primary school involving the community of that locality. The enrolment drive group will organise public meetings, processions and parents-teachers� meeting to increase the enrolment in Government schools.The enrolment drive groups are instructed to explain the benefits of Government schools � that there are adequate schools and the school buildingsare in a good condition, TET qualified teachers have been appointed, free textbooks and copies are provided, free uniforms and mid-day meals are also provided.
