120 public servants held in 20 months

GUWAHATI, Dec 29 - Ever since the new government has taken charge in May last year, more than 120 public servants, working in different capacities with the State government, have been caught on the wrong foot leading to their being either arrested or charge-sheeted by various investigating agencies.

They include 31 agriculture department officials arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the high-profile lime scam and the arrest of 28 ACS, APS and allied services officials by the Dibrugarh Police.

Of the total arrests made during the period by various agencies, the CID has arrested the most number of government servants.

The State�s premier investigating agency had booked nearly 60 State government officials in the span of the last 20 months, mostly on charges of misappropriation of public fund.

Since May 2016, the CID has also filed charge-sheets in 84 cases, of which 18 were referred by other police stations of the State. The number of the accused arrested by the CID in connection with these 84 cases stood at 145.

The charge-sheeted cases include the high-profile lime scam in the agriculture department, official sources told this reporter.

Besides, the CID had charge-sheeted 11 more officials of the agriculture department in connection with the Rashtriya Krishi Bikash Yojana scam. Further, in connection with the BG Bonded Warehouse scam, five excise department officials and a sales tax department official were charge-sheeted.

Further in connection with the ONGC land acquisition scam and the forest department muster roll scam, seven government servants, including bank officials, were charge-sheeted by the CID.

Among the other important cases, the Anti Corruption and Vigilance Wing, too, had arrested six government officials this year in connection with the social welfare department scam, one of the biggest scams to have surfaced in the State.

Further, the Chief Minister�s Vigilance Cell also arrested the incumbent Director of the DIPR, Ranjit Gogoi, in connection with the DIPR advertisement scam. It also arrested senior IAS officer Chauhan Doley in connection with the Rs 120-crore labour department scam.

�Investigation into some of the other scams is nearing completion and more arrests of government servants are likely. Further, prosecution sanctions of some officials are still awaited,� sources added.
