World Tourism Day observed at Kaziranga

KAZIRANGA, Sept 28 - The World Tourism Day was observed in Kaziranga on Friday by the Assam Tourism Department at Bonani Tourists Lodge, Kaziranga. This year, the theme of World Tourism Day is �Tourism and job � a better future for all�.

The programme was initiated by the Deputy Director of Tourism in Kaziranga, Dr HR Das in which a cleaning drive was carried out on the roadside near the Bonani Tourists Lodge as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Later, a painting competition was organised in which school students participated.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Das said that every year World Tourism Day is organised with a definite purpose and objective. He urged the student groups to concentrate on their studies and carry out their duties with responsibility. He also asked the students to remain positive in life.

A local correspondent of an Assamese daily, Swapan Nath spoke about the importance of responsible tourism, which could create more and more jobs for the unemployed sections of the society. He said tourists travelling to Kaziranga from different parts of world have different tastes and likes, adding that some prefer a simple natural ambience to spend one or a few nights in Kaziranga while others prefer luxury accommodation. But he outlined the need for promoting eco-friendly tourism for healthy and sustained tourism.

Nath also emphasised on creating more awareness for responsible tourism. He said �the Assam Tourism Department may take the initiative in organising World Tourism Day in a better way where many more stakeholders of Kaziranga can be involved to create positive awareness in promoting responsible tourism�.

The programme was also attended by the Tourists Information Officer of Kaziranga besides others.

Later, prizes for the painting competition were distributed among the successful students viz., Ankita Bora, Bidisha Hazarika and Nitin Dutta for securing the first, second and third positions respectively, all from Rising Sun English School, Kohora, Kaziranga.
