TURA, Sept 9 - Many people have allegedly been given houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) who are actually very well off. Investigations have revealed that people who do not own land were also part of the same scheme leaving many questions as to how the census was conducted to identify Below Poverty Line (BPL) card holders.
Phulbari falls under the newly-formed Demdema block in West Garo Hills. Earlier called Indira Awas Yojana (IAY), the PMAY is aimed at ensuring housing for BPL families in the country.
Sadhupara village in Phulbari is an example complaints have come from job card holders that the data in the economic census in 2011 was skewed. As a result many genuine beneficiaries were deprived of their dues while others who were well off were given BPL benefits.
�One of the beneficiaries owns a popular hardware store. He also has a three storey building and files Income Tax Returns (ITR). How can he get a PMAY house? A few others who do not have land have also been given PMAY houses,� alleged a resident of the locality.
PMAY provides an amount of at least Rs 1.30 lakh for the construction of a house for BPL card holders.
