Ultras calling shots in North Bank: Padma

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

GUWAHATI, March 23 AGP legislator Padma Hazarika today told the Assembly that NDFB militants were running a parallel government across a large area in the North Bank where the State government and the administration had little presence.

Hazarika also alleged that there was a nexus between the ultras and a section of the police, and demanded a probe into it.

Hazarika said while things improved a little at Biswanath following the creation of a police district, Sonitpur was still bearing the brunt of large-scale extortion and other anti-social activities, with people from all walks of life forced to pay taxes to the gun-totting ultras.

At Chariduar people recently gheraoed the police station for the law-enforcing agencys failure to act tough on the ultras. The temporary paramilitary camp there is also not yielding any positive result, he said.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rakibul Hussain assured the House that the State government would do the needful to ensure the rule of law in the North Bank.
