SHILLONG, Dec 18 - The 77th death anniversary of Khasi poet U Soso Tham was observed today. Rich tributes were paid on the occasion to the poet who enriched Khasi literature through his literary works.
Born in 1873 in Sohra, U Soso Tham first translated some poems of English poets and then Aesop�s Fable known as Ki Phawar U Aesop in 1920, which is widely read even today.
However, when he published the book, he couldn�t find buyers and had to go door-to-door to sell the book. He is also known as a pioneer in Khasi Idioms and was known for his wit that reflected in his literature.
Apart from his literary works, U Soso Tham is known for his Khasi poems and his best known work is Ka Duitara Kshiar (The Golden Harp, 1925). Principal of St Edmund�s College, Sylvanus Lamare, recalling the life of the poet, said a lot of documentation is still required when it comes to the work and life of the poet who revolutionised Khasi literature.
