Two cops injured in Lakhimpur mob attack

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Oct 11 - Two policemen were injured in a mob attack in Lakhimpur district yesterday. The incident took place at Balitika-Konwarpur area when a police team from Dolaghat Police Outpost tried to arrest one Habibur Rahman who was wanted for running a fake gold racket. On seeing the policemen, people assembled in the area, attacked them with lethal weapons. Two policemen namely- Prabin Bora and Nabajit Saikia suffered serious injuries and they were later admitted to North Lahimpur Civil Hospital and their conditions are now stated to be critical.

Later, police arrested five persons, including Fatema Khatun (mother of the accused), Atabur Rahman , Habibur Rahman , Safikul Islam and Afiya Khatun . The accused Rahman surrendered before the police today.

In another development, police arrested one Mainuddin from Bangalmara area of the district for his involvement in running a fake gold trade. Three buyers from outside the state were also arrested along with Mainuddin. Earlier, on October 1, police also arrested three persons in this connection.

It is learnt that a section of traders have been running a fake gold racket in various parts of the district for the past several months. Meanwhile, police has launched a vigorous operation in certain pockets to check the business.
