JORABAT, Sept 15 - Timber is being smuggled from Meghalaya to other states via Assam by trucks that dont carry necessary papers for transportation of the same.

The flying protection squad of the Assam forest department led by Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) Jasimuddin Ahmed, seized a truck (AS 01 DD 5895) carrying pine wood worth lakhs of rupees via NH-37 at Samota, Sonapur last night.

Sources in the forest department said that acting on a tip-off, the forest team chased the truck from Jorabat and finally intercepted it at Sonapur.

Meanwhile, advisor to the Dimoria Regional Unit of AASU Dibyojyoti Medhi alleged that people involved in illegal transportation of timber manage some unscrupulous local forest officials in carrying out the nefarious activity.

The truck was handed over to the Sonapur regional forest office for further action.
