Tributes paid to Ratneswar Goswami

GUWAHATI, Aug 31 - Tributes were paid to the memory of Ratneswar Goswami, retired director of Land Acquisition, Requisition and Reform, Government of Assam, at a function held at Dwaraka Nagar on Thursday.

Senior journalist DN Chakravartty presided over the meeting.

Explaining the purpose of the meeting and dwelling on the life and achievements of Goswami, noted publisher Rajendranath Sarma described Goswami as a friend of the poor, guide of the younger generation and a conscience-keeper of society at large.

Kamini Devi paid tributes to Goswami and recited a self-composed poem dedicated to him.

Dr Sunil Pawan Baruah described Goswami as an honest and efficient officer who earned laurels both from society and the government. He said the services rendered by Goswami as Secretary and Principal Secretary of the Karbi Anglong Autonomous District Council had been acknowledged by the general masses and political leadership of Karbi Angling.

�The popularity of Goswami was such that all the hill tribes of Karbi Anglong wanted to retain Goswami in the district even after he was under a transfer order following promotion,� he said.

Panchanan Sarma, Prafulla Sarma, Tilak Hazarika and noted singer Namita Bhattacharya recalled the qualities of head and heart of Goswami.

Gayatri Goswami, wife of Goswami and Bhaben Goswami, son-in-law, also spoke.
