Tributes paid to Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi

NORTH GUWAHATI, Aug 11 � Under the aegis of the North Guwahati Press Guild, rich tributes were paid to the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi, the first premier of Assam on the occasion of his 61st death anniversary here in the premises of the Lokapriya Gopinath Bardoloi Primary School at Madhyam Khanda, where a statue of the great leader was set up for public view.

A senior social activist Gakuleswar Goswami lighted the ceremonial earthen lamps at the pedestal of the statue. In his speech Goswami recalled the great contributions of the first Bharat Ratna from Assam, especially for his role in saving Assam from being separated from India in the name of partition. The function anchored by Nirmaleswar Goswami, general secretary of the guild and was addressed among others by Anil Das, Sanjib Sarmah, Utpal Das and Ronjan Dutta.

Earlier, the school management observed the day by prayers and illuminating of ceremonial earthen lamps around the statue. Later, the head mistress of the school, Sabita Das offered her prayers in the memory of the great patriot of Assam by speaking a few words in regard to the contributions of the great leader towards Assam and for the country.
