Tributaries above danger mark in Darrang

Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

MANGALDAI, June 11 Water levels of almost all the major tributaries of the Brahmaputra in Darrang district were above the danger level on Wednesday due to the heavy downpour on Tuesday night. According to sources at the Mangaldai Water Resources Division, the Noanadi has been flowing 60 cm above the danger level with an increase of .06 cm from that of the previous days reading till Wednesday afternoon.

Similarly, the water level of the Saktola river has been recorded at 70 cm above the danger level, while the Nanoi river has crossed the danger level by 79 cm. The Bornadi and Mangaldai Noi, the other two rivers including the Brahmputra, have touched the danger level.

However, the sources claimed that apart from some points of the Noanadi dyke, all the other dykes in the district are still at a considerable height from the risen water level. The department has taken necessary repair works to plug the breach on the Noanadi dyke at Alegjhari and Gakhirkhowapara under the Mangaldai Revenue Circle.

On the other hand, floodwaters leaking through the breached portion of the dyke reportedly constructed by the Soil Conservation Department at Borkumarpara and Chengelia village have submerged villages, damaging farmland, houses and PWD roads.

Meanwhile, the erosion protection bundh along the Dahansiri river near Ghiladhari, Bhabapur and Rahmanpur villages, covering about a 2-km distance, was reportedly damaged on Tuesday. Local people alleged that almost 30 percent of the project, which is still under construction at an estimated cost of Rs 3.85 crore under the CRF, has been washed away due to the poor quality of work.

The Assistant Executive Engineer of the Mangaldai Water Resources Division, however, ruled out any serious damage and assured necessary rectification once the water level comes down. He has asked for a detailed report from the Sectional Officer concerned.
