JORABAT, Nov 18 - Soon after the State Election Commission (SEC) announced the dates for election to the Tiwa Autonomous Council, several tribal bodies under the umbrella organisation All Assam Tribal Sangha (AATS) have come up in support of the decision.
The election across 36 constituencies spread over Nagaon, Morigaon, Hojai and Kamrup Metropolitan districts will be held on December 17, 2020. The vote count will take place on December 19.
Talking to The Assam Tribune, Ratneswar Ronghang, president of AATS Dimoria unit said The Tiwa Council election would protect the land rights of the indigenous people of Dimoria. Other AATS leaders also said that the election would bring a ray of hope for safeguarding the land rights of the indigenous tribes living in Dimoria region.
However, the Amri Karbi Students Union (AKSU) and its allied organisations have been strongly opposing the Tiwa election in Dimoria region since long and have launched several protest programmes on the issue.
Reacting to AKSUs opposition, the AATS Dimoria unit said that those who have opposed the Tiwa Council election in Dimoria region are only misleading others and themselves too. The AATS unit also called upon the opposing organisations to come forward and cooperate in conducting the election in a peaceful manner.
