AGARTALA, Sept 5 - The Srinagar border haat, which was opened in the State about four years back in order to boost bilateral trade between India and Bangladesh in the Sabroom subdivision, has fallen silent as trade was suspended on Tuesday.
The first border haat in Tripura was a success in the initial years, prompting Delhi and Dhaka to open more such local trade centres for the benefit of border villagers.
However, the Tripura border haat has lately been facing problems due to imposition of some strict guidelines like not allowing people living beyond a 5-km radius of the trade centre. The border haat has hit a lean phase with traders failing to get adequate numbers of customers.
The border haat wore a deserted look as vendors from both sides did not turn up on the trade day on Tuesday due to the �overbearing attitude� of Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB) personnel.
�A section of BGB officers are not allowing their citizens to buy Indian goods due to the downfall of the Indian currency in the international market. Suspension of trade may be due to growing differences between vendors on the two sides,� said a senior official of the South district over telephone from Belonia said. The official said the issue would be addressed shortly.
