GUWAHATI, Sept 5 - Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today said the State government is working sincerely to find out a lasting solution to the problems being faced by the teachers in Assam.
He said that to enable education as a force-multiplier to the State�s development, the outstanding problems faced by a section of teachers needed to be solved.
Speaking at the State Level Teacher�s Day celebrations organized by the Department of Education at the Srimanta Sankaradeva Kalakshetra, Sonowal said, �Our government is making an all-out effort to resolve all the problems faced by the teaching fraternity of the State.� At the same time, he also appealed to the teachers to be patient and keep contributing to the development of the State.
Synchronising with the occasion, the Chief Minister conferred State Awards on 54 teachers in recognition to their contribution in the field of education. Of these 54 teachers, 10 heads of the institutions were given commendation, which includes citation, shorai, gamosa and Rs 1 lakh, for the best performing schools.
Stating that the State government is striving for transforming the present system of education into a smart system by putting in place the concepts and components like smart-students, smart-teachers, smart-classroom and smart institutions, he said that the government has overhauled the entire system of education for all-round development of the State.
Calling upon the teachers to dedicate themselves for a qualitative facelift of the education system, Sonowal said that the government had introduced �Gunotsav� to bring about qualitative transformation of education. Emphasising that education always encourages cooperation and not conflict, he asserted that education should strengthen the bond of friendship and camaraderie.
Recognising the role of teachers in imparting quality education, he said that the aim of education should be to build a good society and good human beings. �The habits developed while a person is in school become permanent, and therefore, teachers can help the students inculcate good habits and become conscientious citizens,� he added.
Paying rich tributes to Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, on whose birthday the nation celebrates Teacher�s Day, Sonowal said, �We should all emulate the life and philosophy of Dr Radhakrishnan and together with teachers and parents all should take the responsibility to bring in revolutionary changes in our society.�
The Chief Minister also requested Education Minister Siddhartha Bhattacharya to impress upon the Education Department to stop the use of mobile phones by the students in schools.
Education Minister Bhattacharya and former Vice Chancellor of Dibrugarh University Prof Alok Buragohain also spoke.
In the mean time, Teacher�s Day was celebrated across the city with enthusiasm. Assam Jatiya Bidyalay, Noonmati, celebrated the Day at its campus with two parallel programmes � one for the primary section and the other for the high school and higher secondary sections. The significance of organizing an event for the teachers was explained to the audience by Dolly Choudhury, a senior teacher from the school�s English department. The students presented many cultural items, including song and dance. The entire programme was anchored by Ananya Medhi and Bishnurat Bora, both from Class IX.
The chief guest of the programme was Dilip Kumar Das, retired Headmaster of Chenikuthi Primary School, Guwahati, who had been conferred with national and State-level awards. In his speech, he said the young learners are the life force of a society and he called upon each and every student to be a good citizen and contribute to nation building.
Dr Narayan Sharma, secretary of the school management committee, congratulated the teachers on the occasion, while stating that for everyone, parents are the first teachers and teachers are the second parents.
Anand Academy, Dispur, celebrated the day with a difference. In conformity with its theme �Go green and be Nature-friendly�, the school management, instead of conventional gifts, presented saplings to the teachers through schoolchildren. The saplings were provided to the school by North East Wetland, an NGO.
Academic discourse and deliberations by invited guests, and performances by students marked the Teacher�s Day celebration at Shaheen Academy. The chief guest, Anwar Hussain Laskar, MLA, Hailakandi, in his speech exhorted the students to become exemplary citizens to make their teachers proud.
