DIBRUGARH, July 29 - A simple human gesture as doling out some money to the needy is not a big deal. But being benevolent in a situation when he or she is in poverty is really a pious deed. This can aptly be attributed to the plantation workers who came forward to donate whatever little they could for the victims of the recent floods in the district.
At a mere SMS request by the management, the workers donated garments, water bottles, rice, sugar, biscuits, soyabean packets, clothes, milk packets and vegetables, dal, blankets, cooking oil, salt, potato, onion, tea, rice flakes, gur, soap, candles, flour, matchstick boxes, baby food, napkin etc. Initially, the call for voluntary contributions for flood victims was made only to the plantation managements and staff of Tingri and Dibrugarh circles but the workers� union also sought to be involved in the noble mission.
The workers from Balijan (H), Itakhuli, Hatijan, Bahadur, Keyhung, Jutlibari, Anandabari, Zaloni, Khetojan, Mahakali, Dirial, Rajah Ali, Dikom, Romai, Nahortoli and Sealkotee tea estates along with the staff and management of the garden thus voluntarily collected two trucks of relief materials.
The collected materials, which were then handed over to Assam Branch Indian Tea Association (ABITA) Zone 1 for distribution to the needy flood-affected victims, was distributed today in collaboration with the district administration in Lezai Gaon Panchayat under West Revenue Circle of Dibrugarh district. The relief camp was organised at Lezai Higher Secondary School where residents of Jaguban, Lezai 1 No. Gaon, 2 No. Dewanbari, Koibrata Gaon and Hingi Beel collected the relief materials. Some 300 households benefited from the relief camp.
The president of Lezai Gaon Panchayat, ward members and youth of Lezai village provided handholding support in organising the camp smoothly. Madhurjya Barooah, secretary, ABITA Zone 1 thanked the district administration, Dibrugarh for lending support in organising the camp.
