GUWAHATI, Sept 20 - People of the State, particularly the student community, took part in the global climate strike today enthusiastically.
Swedish teenage climate activist, 16-year-old�Greta Thunberg led this biggest global action of the children for climate today to mount pressure on the world leaders for taking appropriate action to arrest global warming and check climate change, preceding the �Global Climate Action Summit� convened by the United Nations.
Greta emerged champion of this cause by staging solo demonstrations in front of the Swedish Parliament in August last year urging the leaders of her country to take effective steps to arrest global warming and to check climate change. Her demonstrations were so effective that teachers, guardians, scientists and the common people of her country came out in the open in support of her protest programmes and later such protest actions spread to the other parts of Europe and then to the rest of the globe.
Lakhs of people from across the globe assembled at Paris on November 30, 2018 when the United Nations-sponsored climate summit was discussing the issue of climate change and thus this protest programme on climate change issues became known as climate strike.
This year too students of 150 countries have taken part in the climate strike led by Greta Thunberg.
In the State, the State wing of the All India People�s Science Network (AIPSN) has taken the lead in organising the climate strike. The AIPSN State wing stated this evening that people from all walks of life today took part in the climate strike programme and such protest activities will continue till September 27, the ultimate date of the United Nations-sponsored �Global Climate Action Summit�.
The State wing of the AIPSN, which comprises the Assam Science Society, Ellora Vigyan Mancha, Gyan Bigyan Samiti and CRU (NER), also informed that students all over the State took part in the programme in an overwhelming manner. In the city, students of Cotton Collegiate Higher Secondary School, Kamrup Academy Higher Secondary School, Uzanbazar Girls� High School, Manik Chandra Baruah High School, Lalsingh Academy, Bakrapara CK Academy, Ojah Hemchandra Baruah School, Chilarai Jatiya Bidyalay, Pub Guwahati Railway Colony High School, Adarsha Bidyalay, New Primary and High School, Kamakhya Bidyalay, CRP Hindi School, Vidya Mandir, Latakata ME School and Pilingkata High School took part in the programme.
The students of the Brahmaputra Bidya Niketan, Noonmati took part in the programme waving their handwritten placards �Our home is burning, Save us�; �Resist global warming�, etc.
Similar reports of enthusiastic participation by the school children in today�s programme have been received from Nagaon, Golaghat, Darrang, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Kamrup, Goalpara, Barpeta, Baksa and other districts till the filing of this report. However, in many educational institutions of some lower Assam districts, today�s programme could not be organised as those schools remained closed due to a bandh, said the AIPSN State wing.
The AIPSN State wing will form a human chain in front of the Guwahati Press Club at 3-30 pm on September 23 in support of the demand for arresting global warming and checking the phenomenon of climate change.
It needs mention here that heads of the countries will take part in the United Nations-sponsored �Global Climate Action Summit� in New York on September 23, 2019.
