State failed to deport 42,000 foreigners

GUWAHATI, Aug 6 � More than 42,000 people declared as foreigners by the Tribunals could not be deported as they went missing. This was disclosed by Forest Minister Rockybul Hussain in a written reply to a question by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta (AGP) in the State Assembly today.

Hussain informed the House that during the period from 1986 to May 31 this year, the Tribunals and Courts declared 59,512 persons as illegal migrants and only 2,446 of them could be deported. He said that 13,900 Bangladeshi nationals registered their names with the FRROs, 636 went for writ appeals and 70 are in the detention camps, while the rest are missing.

The Minister also said that so far 16 rounds of tripartite talks were held among State and Central Governments and the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) on the implementation of the Assam Accord.

Meanwhile, in reply to another question by Keshab Mahanta (AGP), the Minister admitted that the Government has not yet been able to determine the definition of indigenous people for giving constitutional protection under the provisions of Clause 6 of the Accord.

The Minister said the Government has taken steps for protection and preservation of 25 monuments and archaeological sites, while a list of 862 satras has been prepared and 219 of those received financial aid.
