AGARTALA, May 9 (PTI) - In a State like Tripura where 68 per cent of the population live below the poverty line, the government's special economic package for girl child has gone a long way in helping the needy.

Take the example of 25-year-old Gita Debbarma, wife of a former insurgent in Patni village in West Tripura district, who gets Rs 300 per month for her one-year-old daughter under the package.

Her husband Sabir Debbarman, a former insurgent of the banned All-Tripura Tiger Force, had returned home after bidding farewell to arms five years ago.

Gita is not alone, more than 3,232 girls have been covered under this economic package for the BPL families in the State which was launched recently.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar said that a girl would enjoy the benefits under the scheme till the age of 16.
