GUWAHATI, June 29 � After three days of waterlogging, many places of city turned into sludge ponds as the water receded from some of the areas. Major affected localities of Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar and Rajgarh, however, are still witnessing water logging in patches despite the steps taken by the administration.
Various arterial roads including the RG Baruah Road, GNB Road, MRD Road, Zoo Narengi Road and parts of GS Roads witnessed heaps of sludge and soil accumulated on the sides. Dust on the roads, due to vehicular movement is also giving a tough time to the commuters.
Residents complained that the motors installed by the authorities to pump out water from the by-lanes in Rajgarh area are of lower capacity. The affected by-lanes and houses are still submerged in water with residents living under harrowing conditions. Fearing the spread of infection and diseases, the people are spraying phenyl and bleaching powder in the surroundings of their houses.
In Anil Nagar and Tarun Nagar too, people are far from getting any relief even after three days of continuous waterlogging. Rickshaws are the only means of communication in such areas, with people trapped in their houses in several localities.
�We have been working continuously for providing relief to the people. Much cleaning has been done in the bylane 1, 2, 5 and 6 in Rajgarh area. However, bylane 3 and 4 need some more efforts. Half of Pub Sarania Road has been cleared. Water and sludge are also being cleaned continuously from other affected areas including Anil Nagar and Nabin Nagar ,� said the district administration sources.
A landslide was also witnessed today at Jotiya in Kahilipara in which a wall of a house collapsed. However, no casualty has been reported in the incident. �Total 19 units of the district administration are involved in creating awareness about landslide in the vulnerable areas. We are facing difficulties as the people are not willing to evacuate the vulnerable places,� added the sources.
