Skilled youths demand jobs

DIBRUGAH, June 1 � The Dibrugarh District Skilled Un-Employed Youth Association (DDSUYA) today took out a protest rally along the Mancotta Road from Old Government Boys� High School field and later staged a demonstration in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here, demanding job placement.

The protesting members of the association were largely the youths who had undergone different vocational trainings at the National Academy of

Construction (NAC), Hyderabad under the support of Government of Assam to meet the shortfall of skilled workers for setting up of the mega gas cracker project at Lepetkata.

Binod Saikia, general secretary of the association�s district unit said that the youths despite having the required skills were not getting jobs. �The trained youths have been left without job. No contractor is hiring these skilled youths. Our future is bleak as we are finding it hard to handle the daily expenses,� Saikia who led the rally with about two hundred youths said. Several hundreds of youths had undergone training in trades like carpentry, wielding, masonry, store keeping, electrical wiring, plumbing, bar bending etc. As the construction activities at the gas cracker project have been over now, these youths have become unemployed.

The association slammed Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi for failing to solve the unemployment problem in the State. The youths staged demonstration for about two hours and later submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the administration, apprising of the situation of unemployment and seeking immediate job opportunities for the youths of the State.
