DIBRUGARH, Jan 6 - In the open session of the concluding event of All Assam Ahom Associations 61st biennial State Conference held at Chowkidinghee ground here, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal today declared that the State government will facilitate establishing Swargadeo Chaolung Siukapha Chair in Dibrugarh University to carry out in-depth research and study on the Ahom king, his rule, ideals and philosophy of greater Assamese community.

Earlier, the demand for Swargadeo Chaolung Siukapha Chair in Dibrugarh University was raised by Power Minister Tapan Kumar Gogoi in his speech. The declaration of Swargadeo Chaolung Siukapha Chair at Dibrugarh University by the Chief Minister comes at a time when the Ahom organisations are demanding naming the countrys longest rail-cum-road Bogibeel bridge after Chaolung Suikapha.

Earlier, on his arrival at the venue, Sonowal faced protest by members at Chowkidinghee intersection from some 70 organisations led jointly by Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad over Prime Minister Narendra Modis recent declaration that the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill would be passed. The protestors slammed Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, stating that he was wearing a mask of 'Jatiyo Nayak'. A few members also waved black flags at the Chief Minister. His effigy was also burnt at the protest site despite deployment of heavy security in and around the Chowkidinghee ground.

One KMSS leader Hemanta Konwar was arrested for waving a black flag at the site as Chief Minister was making his way to the Chowkidinghee ground. Later, police arrested all the protestors including women activists.
