JORABAT, June 13 - Members of the Sikh community offered cool sharbat (drinks) to motorists and passersby this afternoon on NH-37 and NH-6 here in remembrance of the martyrdom of Guru Arjan Dev Ji. The community offers such sharbat during this month to people all over the world.

A devotee informed that in the hot summer month of May 1606, their fifth spiritual leader Guru Arjan Dev Ji was tortured to death by a Mughal emperor over certain spiritual issues and differences.

As per old historical records, heated sand was thrown on the Guru as part of the torture. Hence, to remember this sacrifice, Sikhs distribute refreshing cool drinks to the people, while greeting each other with the word Waheguru (the wonderful teacher). A large number of local residents and traders from other communities also joined the Sikhs in distributing sharbat to motorists and passersby.
