Update: 2010-09-15 00:00 GMT

TURA, Oct 26 The Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) today joined the clamour for a probe into the death of Sub Inspector Promoth Sangma. The outfit also claimed that eyewitness accounts have stated that Sangmas death was a case of mistaken firing and it was his own team that shot him.

In a release today, GNLA Deputy C-In-C Toding Marak said, The death of Promoth Sangma who was killed in the encounter against militants in Songmagre village near Purakhasia as alleged by ASP of West Garo Hills Bruno A Sangma is shrouded in mystery and contradictory with the statement of the villagers who are witnesses to the incident. The villagers informed that there were no militants in the village.

It was a sheer mistake on the part of the operation team. They opened fire assuming members of an outfit to be holed up inside thus killing him, said Marak.
