Shop burgled, cash looted

JORHAT, Oct 12 - Thieves broke into a shop on the ground floor of a market complex at Gar-Ali in the heart of the town on Thursday night and reportedly decamped with over Rs 25,000 cash after breaking the cash box.

As per the complaint lodged by the owner of the shop that makes posters and banners from flex at the City Market complex, a thief alone or with accomplices, broke the exhaust fan on the wall and entered the room. Thereafter, the thief broke the cash box and took away the money.

Since beginning of this year there has been a spurt in incidents of thefts in shops, lifting of vehicles along with incidents of snatchings bags containing cash and also mobile handsets from pedestrians and pillion-riders by motorbike-borne youths in and around the town.

It may be mentioned here that in January this year Jorhat Police had installed 32 CCTV cameras at different areas of the town under a project to assist in curbing crime, but a source stated several cameras of late were not functioning.
