GUWAHATI, Sept 9 - The Global Organisation for Life Development (GOLD) and the Kailash Satyarthi Childrens Foundation will be organising a sensitisation programme on child labour in 10 districts of the State.

The programme, which will be a part of their Rape Free Assam campaign, will cover Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Sivasagar, Nalbari, Kamrup, Kamrup (Metro), Baksa, Sonitpur and Darrang districts.

During a ground-level study carried out recently we have found that child labour is the prime factor responsible for prevalence of rape and trafficking. So, we are carrying out a Jana Andolan against the social evil, said Kaberi Sarma, an official of the GOLD.

She alleged that lack of co-ordination among different government departments is always causing hindrances in carrying out operations to rescue child labours.

Flood-affected areas and tea gardens have the highest prevalence of child labour in Assam. Guwahati has also become a source area, she said.

Under the campaign, which will start next week and continue till December, meetings will be organised to create awareness against child labour, particularly among children.
