AHMEDABAD, July 16 (PTI): Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Sarbananda Sonowal today welcomed the decisions of the Supreme Court-appointed committee on the betting activities in IPL and said they would be strictly followed.

According to Sonowal, people of India want the sports to be above corruption and controversy.

Whatever the court has decided and whatever order has come, has to be strictly followed to bring governance and accountability. We also want to make the sports activities more transparent, said Sonowal when asked by media to comment on the development.

Earlier on Tuesday, two IPL teams - Chennai Super Kings Rajasthan Royals - were suspended from the IPL for two years for betting activities of their key officials Gurunath Meiyappan and Raj Kundra during the 2013 season.

The punishment was handed down by a Supreme Court-appointed three-member committee headed by former Chief Justice of Indian RM Lodha.

Commenting on the order, Sonowal said that sports should be clean and fair.

People of our country expects that sports should be above corruption and controversy. Sports should be clean and fair, the minister said here.
