GUWAHATI, July 23 � Major Satyabrata Bhuyan Lahkar, a literary pension holder and the editor of the Assamese monthly journal Nam Nai, died at his Rehabari residence here around 5.20 pm today. According to family sources, the end came due to old age ailment. He was 93.
Bhuyan Lahkar, who was commissioned to the Indian Army in 1942, took part in the Second World War in the Arakan Front and also went to Singapore and met Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose there.
He served also as an Assistant Political Officer of the Indian Frontier Service and also the Assam Police. He played a lead role in resisting attempts at annexation of Goalpara with West Bengal. He had penned a book � Betrayal of Assam � during the Assam agitation and it became one of the best sellers then.
He had founded Nam Nai in 1958. He was also the founder editor of Nam Ache, an Assamese weekly, which has now ceased publication. He was conferred the Assam Ratna title at a public meeting held at the Curzon Hall (now Nabin Bordoloi Hall) in 1962.
He leaves behind his wife, son Bedabrata Lahkar, who is an Assistant Editor of The Assam Tribune, three daughters and a host of relatives. His cremation will be held at Navagraha cremation ground at 10 am tomorrow.
