GUWAHATI, Jan 10 - Leader of Opposition in the Assam Legislative Assembly Debabrata Saikia has condemned the violence that erupted today at Dhula of Darrang district.

He termed the official inquiry ordered by the government as inadequate and demanded a judicial inquiry.

The Congress leader said that incidents of firing, use of teargas shells and lathicharge by the police has become frequent in the past several months and cited the example of one person being killed in police firing in Goalpara on June 30 last year and a similar action against protesters in Golaghat on December 19.

Saikia said that the belligerent policy adopted by the police was creating concern and outrage among the populace of Assam.

Ripun Bora, president of Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), also condemned the incident and termed it as a case of gross violation of human right.

Bora said that police did not stop merely at taking the life of an innocent person in custody, but also used brutal force against agitators who had assembled to protest against the killing.

He said that the BJP-led State government has shown its fascist mindset through the incident.

Bora demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the matter and said the guilty police officials must be punished.

AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal also condemned the incident and demanded punishment for the police officials involved in the alleged custodial death and firing and also said the families of the victims should be provided adequate compensation.
