Rudra Barua remembered

GUWAHATI, Feb 15 - The 40th death anniversary of �Luit Konwar� Rudra Barua was observed under the joint aegis of Dibrugarh Sangeet Vidyalaya and the Dibrugarh unit of Mouchak yesterday, a press release received here stated.

On the occasion, a lamp was lit before a photograph of the late artiste by Nabin Ch Sarma, the president of the Dibrugarh Satriya Nritya Kendra and a close associate of Rudra Barua.

Sarma spoke on the musical genius of Rudra Barua. The chief guest of the meeting, Prof Ananda Bormudoi, an eminent litterateur, critic and former HoD, English, Dibrugarh University, said Rudra Barua's contributions in the field of folk music of Assam were unparalleled. His songs reflect the real life of the villages, the scent of the soil, and steps should be taken to popularise these songs.

His songs occupy a special place in the realm of Assamese music, Prof Bormudoi added.

The meeting was presided over by the president of the Dibrugarh Sangeet Vidyalaya, Bhudev Phukan. Among those present on the occasion were artiste Rajen Gohain, the principal of Chaolkhowa Sangeet Mahavidyalaya, Dr Dilip Ranjan Barthakur, principal of Kanoi College, Dr Sashikanta Saikia, who all spoke on the various facets of Barua's songs and music.

Various songs composed by Barua were also presented at the programme by the artistes of Dibrugarh Sangeet Vidyalaya.

The principal of Dibrugarh Sangeet Vidyalaya, Ranjana Sarma Bordoloi and the president of Mouchak, Sanjeev Bordoloi also spoke on the topic, the release added.
