Retired teacher awarded for article on tobacco

JORABAT, May 31 - Minati Roymedhi, a retired teacher based in Guwahati was awarded a special prize by Mumbai-based NGO Sanjeevani Life Beyond Cancer for her essay on tobacco titled The story of Tobacco.

Roymedhi was given the award at a programme organised at the Dr B Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) by Dr AC Kataki, Director of BBCI in the presence of Brig Yogendra Singh, Commandant of 151 Base Hospital; Dr Abhijit Sharma, Director of Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship and cinestar Kapil Bora.

Programme executive of Sanjeevani Sumki Begum said that the reason behind awarding Roymedhi, who was a history teacher by profession, was to encourage and motivate others to come forward to help create a tobacco-free environment and help in the fight against cancer.

In her speech, Minati Roymedhi said more such programmes should be organised to create awareness about the ill-effects of tobacco among common people.
