Restrictions on entry, movement of trucks

GUWAHATI, Sept 27 - In view of the changed traffic scenario in the city, the City Traffic Police has issued fresh orders with regard to entry and movement of six-wheeler trucks and four-wheeler trucks in Guwahati.

The new order, issued by the City Traffic Police under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988, is in partial modification of the earlier order issued by the then Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Guwahati, in July 2014.

It has been issued in respect of entry and movement of six-wheeler trucks and four-wheeler trucks in the city in view of the changed traffic scenario over the last few years to ensure safe and smooth flow of vehicular traffic during busy hours and also in view of changed school timings and movement of other vehicular traffic.

Speaking to The Assam Tribune today, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Amanjeet Kaur said that the modifications have been made as part of an effort to deal with the traffic problems of Guwahati.

�Our aim is to ensure safety of citizens and also to remove congestion from city roads,� she said.

As per the notification, henceforth all six-wheeler trucks shall be allowed to enter the city limits after 11 pm and up to 6 am only.

The trucks having challan to Fancy Bazar, Bharalumukh and Athgaon will be allowed to enter via Jalukbari Rotary, while the trucks having challan to Fatasil Ambari area will be allowed to enter through Lokhra and Garchuk road.

The trucks having challan to Dispur and Bhangagarh area will enter through Tripura Road, Sixth Mile. Similarly, while going out, these trucks will follow the same routes.

During the no-entry period for these types of vehicles, restriction shall be imposed at certain entry points including Jalukbari, Sixth Mile, Lokhra, Garchuk, Narengi and BG Yard and FCI Depot approach towards Geetanagar, Noonmati (Guwahati side).

The order, however, added that for six-wheeler trucks plying from BG Yard and FCI Depot to outside the city via Express Highway, Sixth Mile and Tripura Road and vice versa, and from BG Yard to FCI Depot and vice versa, the no-entry timings will be applicable from 7.30 am to 11.30 am, 1.30 pm to 4 pm and 5 pm to 9.30 pm.

But, there will be no restrictions on the movement of six-wheeler trucks carrying petroleum products from New Guwahati to Khanapara via Mathgharia, Zoo Narengi Road, RG Baruah Road and Ganeshguri, except during 7.30 am to 11.30 am, 1.30 pm to 4.00 pm and 5 pm to 9.30 pm.

Petroleum tankers, SK oil tankers, LPG tankers and trucks carrying other petroleum products for places other than Guwahati will have to ply via Mathgharia, Sixth Mile and Khanapara for going outside the city.

There will be no restriction on the movement of four-wheeler mini-trucks on the city roads, except during 7.30 am to 11.30 am, 1.30 pm to 4 pm and 5 pm to 9.30 pm only. During these timings, four-wheeler trucks have been prohibited from plying in the city.
