Ranjan Gogoi sworn in as SC judge

GUWAHATI, April 23 � Justice Ranjan Gogoi was today sworn in as a Supreme Court judge. The Chief Justice of India S H Kapadia administered the oath of office to Justice Gogoi, former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Born on November 18, 1954, Justice Gogoi had joined the Bar in 1978 and had an extensive practice in all branches of law. He joined the judiciary on February 28, 2001 when he was made a permanent judge of the Gauhati High Court. He is the son of late Keshab Chandra Gogoi, a former Chief Minister of Assam.

Justice Gogoi had taken charge as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on February 12 last year. He was transferred to the High Court of Punjab and Haryana and had assumed office on September 9, 2010.

In the swearing-in ceremony today, judges and advocates of the Supreme Court, former Additional Solicitor General of India P K Goswami, Justice Gogoi�s mother Shanti Priya Gogoi, his brother Air Marshal Anjan Gogoi, Advocate General of Arunachal Pradesh Ashok Saraf and newly elected Chairman of the Bar Council of India (Executive Committee) Apurba Kumar Sarma were present, among others.
