TURA, Sept 2 - Smuggling of illegal timber cut from the reserve forests near Williamnagar continues unabated. Jengjal police under West Garo Hills district yesterday stopped a group of timber smugglers who were about to load and transport the timber from Bolbokgre area.

The incident took place at about 9 pm yesterday.

After receiving information from sources, Jengjal police swooped down on the spot where the illegal timber was being kept for transportation near Bolbokgre village . However, the criminals who were guarding the logs (12 sal logs measuring 3 feet in diameter and 8 feet long) were able to get away from the police by taking advantage of the darkness.

In order to ensure that the criminals did not return to make another attempt a night guard was kept on duty before the logs were finally handed over this morning to the State Fforest department for further investigation.

Yesterdays incident follows several incidents last week of illegal smuggling of timber indicating that unscrupulous elements were bent upon forest destruction with the help of some corrupt officials in the administration.
